Detached Homes for Sale in Milton, ON

A detached house in Milton can mean a Victorian on a big lot in Old Milton, a 1980s family home in Timberlea, a 2000s two-storey in the Bristol Survey, a newer Mattamy home near the escarpment, or an estate property near Campbellville. These are all of them for sale today.

Lot sizes in Milton's newer surveys are often narrower than buyers from Oakville or Mississauga expect, so I always look at frontage and depth, not just the house.

Detached homes by era

Old Milton has a few hundred heritage homes on mature, tree-lined streets close to Main Street, many with detached garages. Timberlea's houses are mostly from the late 1970s and 1980s, with brick exteriors and wider lots. Dempsey, Beaty, Clarke and Coates have early 2000s two-storeys, many with double built-in garages. Harrison, Scott and Willmott, on the west side, have some of the largest newer detached homes in town, often with escarpment views.

If you want acreage, the rural areas around Campbellville, Nassagaweya and Trafalgar have estate and country properties. They need extra due diligence on wells, septic, conservation authority rules and, in some spots, the Niagara Escarpment Plan.

Things I check on a Milton detached home

On 2000s homes, the age of the roof, furnace and air conditioner, any basement finished without a permit, and whether a side door was added for a second unit. On older homes in Old Milton, wiring, plumbing, foundation and whether the property has a heritage designation. On rural properties, water quality and quantity, septic condition and any conservation regulation on the land.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the biggest detached homes in Milton?

Within the urban area, Willmott, Harrison and Scott on the west side have some of the larger newer homes, and Old Milton and Timberlea have some of the larger lots. For acreage, look at the rural areas around Campbellville and Nassagaweya.

Are there detached bungalows in Milton?

Some. Timberlea and Old Milton have most of the older bungalows and backsplits, and a smaller number of newer bungalows were built in the surveys. They are in demand from downsizers, so they move when priced well.

Can I find a detached home in Milton with a legal basement apartment?

Some detached homes have registered second units. If a listing mentions one, I ask for the permit and registration paperwork, because an unpermitted unit can affect insurance, financing and resale.

Does living near the escarpment limit what I can build?

It can. Properties within the Niagara Escarpment Plan area may need a development permit from the Niagara Escarpment Commission for additions, pools or new buildings, and conservation authority rules can apply near creeks. I flag this early for any rural or edge-of-town property.
